About the Pirates

In the spring of 2019, the Lake Superior Pirates were founded on the principles of providing a different kind of AAA hockey experience. That spring we started with (4) teams, and have now grown to 11 adhering to our core values of development through a team attitude.

The primary mission of the Pirates remains athletic development and below we have listed the guidelines we are following to fulfill that mission.

  1. This team will be hand-picked (no pay to play or open tryouts) – if you commit to us, then we will commit to your kid.
  2. We believe development is key.  By offering additional team opportunities (on and off the ice), we believe it will encourage development through hard work, team commitment and the determination put forth by your athlete.
    1. On-ice practices as well as dryland and team building events.
    2. Dryland training will be supported by a Physical Therapist (D) with a Sports Therapy background.
      1. Dryland is fast becoming an important tool used by upper level teams to help each individual maximize their potential. We have coaches with experience in running dryland with great results for the kids development, strength and most importantly, confidence.
      2. Allows us to teach an overall culture of team concepts and dedication to hard work.
  3. We’d like to view this as a “second season” to association hockey.  We would like to start in March and end in June with an end of summer tournament.
  4. We’d like this team to be relatively local so these practices are possible for all the kids to attend.
  5. We will play in (3-4) tournaments and will do our best to keep at least one tournament local, possibly more.

We have grown our base of passionate coaches who not only embrace this mission but also represent several local associations including Duluth East, Hermantown, Grand Rapids, Hibbing, Greenway and Cloquet.  These coaches include former college/pro hockey players, as well as a full time goalie coach, to skate and coach the kids on and off the ice to develop not just great hockey players, but athletes.
